Tracing the Life Cycle of Ideas in the Humanities and Social Sciences Book Review:

This book demonstrates how quantitative methods for text analysis can successfully combine with qualitative methods in the study of different disciplines of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). The book focuses on learning about the evolution of ideas of HSS disciplines through a distant reading of the contents conveyed by scientific literature, in order to retrieve the most relevant topics being debated over time. Quantitative methods, statistical techniques and software packages are used to identify and study the main subject matters of a discipline from raw textual data, both in the past and today. The book also deals with the concept of quality of life of words and aims to foster a discussion about the life cycle of scientific ideas. Textual data retrieved from large corpora pose interesting challenges for any data analysis method and today represent a growing area of research in many fields. New problems emerge from the growing availability of large databases and new methods are needed to retrieve significant information from those large information sources. This book can be used to explain how quantitative methods can be part of the research instrumentation and the "toolbox" of scholars of Humanities and Social Sciences. The book contains numerous examples and a description of the main methods in use, with references to literature and available software. Most of the chapters of the book have been written in a non-technical language for HSS researchers without mathematical, computer or statistical backgrounds.

Assessing Low-Carbon Development in Nigeria Book Review:

The Federal Government of Nigeria has adopted Vision 20: 2020—an ambitious strategy to make Nigeriathe world's 20th largest economy by 2020. In the absence of policies to accompany economic growth in keycarbon-emitting sectors with a reduced carbon footprint, emission of greenhouse gases could more thandouble in the next two decades. To evaluate how to achieve the objectives of Vision 20: 2020 with reduced carbon emissions, the FederalGovernment of Nigeria and the World Bank undertook a multiyear program of analytical work. The summaryresults of this program are contained in a separate book (published in the World Bank's “Directions in Development”series) entitled Low-Carbon Development: Opportunities for Nigeria, which concludes that Nigeria canachieve its development objectives, while stabilizing emissions at 2010 levels and providing domestic benefi tson the order of 2 percent of GDP.This volume is a collection of the background technical reports on the four sectors of inquiry: agriculture andland use, oil and gas, power, and transport. It contains details on the data, methodology, and assumptions usedthroughout the analysis. For agriculture and land use, the study team developed an agriculture production growth model, whichpermits the evaluation of sector emissions in both a reference and a low-carbon scenario. The study fi nds thatlow-carbon practices have signifi cant potential to make the sector more productive and more climate-resilient.For the oil and gas sector, the analysis assesses the potential of accelerated phase-put of gas fl aring, reductionof leakages, and increased energy effi ciency in the operation of facilities, to both reduce the sector's emissionand contribute to the industry's net revenues and growth. The analysis of the power sector shows how thecountry can expand power generation and broaden access to electricity while reducing associated emissions, through renewable energy, energy effi ciency, and lower-carbon technologies in thermal power generation. Finally, this analysis assesses the expected growth in CO2 emissions from on-road transport under a normalbusiness development scenario up to the year 2035, and it identifi es actions at national and local levels thatwould reduce this growth, resulting in fuel economies, better air quality, and reduced congestion.Assessing Low-Carbon Development in Nigeria: An Analysis of Four Sectors outlines several actions that theNigerian government could undertake to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Behavioral and neuroscientific analysis of economic decision making in animals Book Review:

The experimental analysis of animal behavior has a rich tradition in psychology, behavioral ecology and many other scientific branches dedicated to the study of decision making. However, it has never enjoyed a similar popularity in economics. This has recently changed with the dawn of neuroeconomics – a discipline combining the analytic and experimental tools of psychology and economics with the technologies available in neuroscience to unravel the neurobiological mechanisms underlying economic behavior. Since many of the sophisticated neuroscientific techniques can only be used on animals, neuroeconomists have come up with a large and ever-growing repertoire of animal models to probe economic decision making. Besides the value of using animals as model systems to emulate human economic behavior, the discipline of animal economic decision making exists in its very own right: an abundance of animal species at various evolutionary stages show behavior that complies with many of the predictions of economic theory, whilst, at the same time demonstrating violations of optimal choice models that are reminiscent of similar anomalies found in human behavior. Hence, the analysis of animal choice does not only offer insights into the evolutionary origins of economic decision making, it also testifies that the analysis of animal behavior is a convenient, economical and sound way to test competing economic decision models in optimally controlled experimental environments, to probe their neural implementation and to yield common denominators in choice behavior. In short, economic theory provides more than just an alternative language to describe animal psychology: its combination with biology, psychology and neuroscience gives way to synergy effects that open up new venues for studying economic choice. In this special issue, we would like to gather the latest results from this cross-disciplinary topic, address the overlap and discrepancies in (the neurobiology of) economic decision making found between species and identify the challenges that lie ahead in translating results from species to species, and ultimately to humans. The exclusive focus on non-human animals makes this Research Topic unique and distinct from previous special issues which covered a broader range of matters and subjects in the neurobiological analysis of decision making.

Life-Cycle Assessment of Biorefineries Book Review:

Life-Cycle Assessment of Biorefineries, the sixth and last book in the series on biomass-biorefineries discusses the unprecedented growth and development in the emerging concept of a global bio-based economy in which biomass-based biorefineries have attained center stage for the production of fuels and chemicals. It is envisaged that by 2020 a majority of chemicals currently being produced through a chemical route will be produced via a bio-based route. Agro-industrial residues, municipal solid wastes, and forestry wastes have been considered as the most significant feedstocks for such bio-refineries. However, for the techno-economic success of such biorefineries, it is of prime and utmost importance to understand their lifecycle assessment for various aspects. Provides state-of-art information on the basics and fundamental principles of LCA for biorefineries Contains key features for the education and understanding of integrated biorefineries Presents models that are used to cope with land-use changes and their effects on biorefineries Includes relevant case studies that illustrate main points
