Three instrumented aircraft were used to study the development and separation of charge in large clouds. Basic cloud physics data regarding liquid water content, icing rate, temperature, precipitation forms, cloud photography, airborne radar cross sections, and three components of electric field were obtained from a C-130 aircraft. Two electric field components, temperatures, photography, and draft structure were obtained from an F-100F aircraft. A U-2 aircraft provided field data above the storms.

Giant Molecular Clouds in the Galaxy: Third Gregynog Astrophysics Workshop covers the proceedings of the 1977 Third Gregynog Astrophysics Workshop on Giant Molecular Clouds (GMC), held at the University of Wales. Disasters have always occurred in Australia, even before European settlement began in 1788. Such is the geography and climate of the 'Great South Land' that disasters such as bushfires, cyclones, storms, floods, drought and heatwaves are natural phenomena. They also tend to be seasonal and can be successive: bushfires follow periods of drought or heatwave, and floods follow cyclones or storms. The original inhabitants as well as those who came after the First Fleet have had to learn to live with these and to find ways to overcome the impacts. Australia has also occasionally been affected by natural disasters not commonly associated with this part of the world, including earthquakes, tornadoes and landslides. While most do not result in loss of human life or major damage, they are significant owing to their rarity. People tend to equate disasters with loss of human life and this book includes most of the disasters in Australia that have resulted in loss of life. There have been a number with significant loss of life, including Cyclone Mahina in 1899, the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983, the Gundagai floods of 1852, Cyclone Tracy in 1974 and the Granville bridge collapse in 1977. There have been also been many where although fewer lives were lost there was a great damage toll on buildings and property, such as the Newcastle earthquake in 1989, the Sydney hail storm of 1999 and the northern Tasmanian floods of 1929. Structural fires are also commonly placed in the disaster category because they are so costly in terms of fatalities, injuries and damage. Many people, however, don't include economic or agricultural impact among the criteria for disasters, which means drought and heatwaves are often disregarded. However, these are synonymous with Australia and many have taken a great toll. This book is part of Exisle Publishing's Little Red Books series. Comet nuclei are the most primitive bodies in the solar system. They have been created far away from the early Sun and their material properties have been altered the least since their formation. Thus, the composition and structure of comet nuclei provide the best information about the chemical and thermodynamic conditions in the nebula from which our solar system formed. In this volume, cometary experts review a broad spectrum of ideas and conclusions based on in situ measurement of Comet Halley and remote sensing observations of the recent bright Comets Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake. The chemical character of comet nuclei suggests many close similarities with the composition of interstellar clouds. It also suggests material mixing from the inner solar nebula and challenges the importance of the accretion shock in the outer nebula. The book is intended to serve as a guide for researchers and graduate students working in the field of planetology and solar system exploration. These are the proceedings of international conference on Numerical As trophysics 1998 (NAP98), held at National Olympic Memorial Youth Cen ter, in Tokyo, Japan in the period of March 10 - 13, 1998, and hosted by the National Astronomical Observatory, Japan (NAOJ). In the last decade numerical simulations have grown up as a major tool for astrophysics. Numerical simulations give us invaluable informa tion on complex systems and physical processes under extreme conditions which can be neither realized by experiments nor directly observed. Super computers and special purpose computers may work as very large telescopes and special purpose telescopes for theoretical astrophysics, respectively. Nu merical astrophysics ranks with other tool-oriented astronomy such as ra dio astronomy, infrared astronomy, ultraviolet astronomy, X-ray astronomy, and ')'-ray astronomy. This conference, NAP98, was planned to explore recent advances in astrophysics aided by numerical simulations. The subjects of the confer ence included the large-scale structure formation, galaxy formation and evolution, star and planets formation, accretion disks, jets, gravitational wave emission, and plasma physics. NAP98 had also sessions on numerical methods and computer science. The conference was attended by 184 sci entists from 21 countries. We enjoyed excellent talks, posters, videos, and discussions: there are 40 oral presentations, 96 posters and 16 video pre sentations. We hope that these proceedings and accompanying CD-ROM replay the friendly but inspiring atmosphere of the conference.
