Why read a book about giving? Because every action we take is an act of giving: of time, energy, and attention. We give to some and withhold from others every hour of every day. Isn't it worth a look, then, at why we make the decisions we do? Give to Your Heart's Content ... Without Giving Yourself Away unlocks the secrets to understanding how your giving style affects your life. This is not a book about giving more or giving less. It is about giving authentically from your deepest self. Giving that nurtures rather than depletes. Each chapter includes self-assessments, practices, rewards, and contemplations to help you find the rich satisfaction of soulful giving. Book jacket.

A New York Times Notable Book: A group forms its own surrogate family on the margins of society in this novel by the author of The Beans of Egypt, Maine. Mickey Gammon, fifteen, has dropped out of school and been kicked out of his home. But he has found a new place in the Settlement—a rural cooperative that deals in alternative energy, farm produce, and locally made goods. Run by “The Prophet,” the Settlement is demonized by the media as a compound of sin, but its true nature remains foreign to outsiders. It is here where Mickey meets another deserted child, six-year-old Jane, whose mother is in jail on trumped-up drug charges. Playing “secret agent,” Jane cunningly prowls the Settlement in her heart-shaped sunglasses, imagining that her plans to bring down the community will reunite her with her mother. As they struggle to adjust to their new, complex surrogate family, Mickey and Jane are about to witness mounting unrest within the Settlement’s ranks—which soon builds to a shocking and devastating crescendo. The School on Heart’s Content Road is “a profoundly human novel . . . Absolutely one of a kind” (USA Today), from an author who, “like Flannery O’Connor . . . has a gift for expressing the true spirit of a culture” (San Francisco Chronicle). “Chute can’t help but create characters who live and breathe.” —The Washington Post

Never were there two more unlikely people to fall in love... Lady Alexandria Cassel scorned London's frivolous social whirl, seeking adventure as a stowawayaboard a merchant ship. Drake Barrett was the vessel's powerful captain -- and a cynical duke who disdained a noble's shallow life. At sea he revealed neither his origins nor his wealth, and to Alexandria he was simply a man who made her cool reserve fly with the winds...whose desire for her was as wildas the ocean they sailed. Caught in the crossfire of war, they were shipwrecked on an idyllic island, where they tasted perfect passion...and tenderness. But Drake dreaded the day of their rescue -- when his love would discover that the virile man she adored was at the pinnacle of the aristocracy she despised. Hardlydid they suspect the base treachery that would soon threaten them...and the dangers each would brave to join forever their hearts and lives!
The Goddess as Role Model

This book seeks to understand the major mythological role models that mark the moral landscape navigated by young Hindu women. Traditionally, the goddess Sita, faithful consort of the god Rama, is regarded as the most important positive role model for women. The case of Radha, who is mostly portrayed as a clandestine lover of the god Krishna, seems to challenge some of the norms the example of Sita has set. That these role models are just as relevant today as they have been in the past is witnessed by the popularity of the televised versions of their stories, and the many allusions to them in popular culture. Taking the case of Sita as main point of reference, but comparing throughout with Radha, Pauwels studies the messages sent to Hindu women at different points in time. She compares how these role models are portrayed in the most authoritative versions of the story. She traces the ancient, Sanskrit sources, the medieval vernacular retellings of the stories and the contemporary TV versions as well. This comparative analysis identifies some surprising conclusions about the messages sent to Indian women today, which belie the expectations one might have of the portrayals in the latest, more liberal versions. The newer messages turn out to be more conservative in many subtle ways. Significantly, it does not remain limited to the religious domain. By analyzing several popular recent and classical hit movies that use Sita and Radha tropes, Pauwels shows how these moral messages spill into the domain of popular culture for commercial consumption.
