It gives you both an opportunity to get comfortable and gives the examiner an initial general idea of your level of English. There's no need to feel nervous here. I know that it's very difficult not to feel a little bit nervous but try to think of this as a friendly informal chat with a friend or an acquaintance. The examiner wants you to succeed in the IELTS test, and if you can show your personality and feel relaxed enough to show the examiner your level of English you will succeed.
