Saint Antonino, also known to us as Satin Antoninus lived as a Bishop during the Western Schism. In studying the history of that time, one considers the great spiritual upheaval of a crisis in the Papacy, which lasted for forty years. Fr. Bede Jarrett considers Saint Antoninus and his commentary on the economic upheaval, occurring at that same time and how we can learn from the lessons of the Western Schism in order to cure the economic ills of today.St. Alphonsus writes: "a single bad book will be sufficient to cause the destruction of a monastery." Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947 at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: "There rises to Our lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals!' (Matthew 18:7). Woe to those who consciously and deliberately spread corruption-in novels, newspapers, magazines, theaters, films, in a world of immodesty!" We at St. Pius X Press are calling for a crusade of good books. We want to restore 1,000 old Catholic books to the market. We ask for your assistance and prayers. This book is a photographic reprint of the original The original has been inspected and many imperfections in the existing copy have been corrected. At Saint Pius X Press our goal is to remain faithful to the original in both photographic reproductions and in textual reproductions that are reprinted. Photographic reproductions are given a page by page inspection, whereas textual reproductions are proofread to correct any errors in reproduction.

Septuagesima Sunday THE WORK OF THE VINEYARD Going out about the third hour, he saw others standing in the market-place idle. And he said to them :G oyou also into my vineyard and I will give you what shall be just. Matt. xx. 3. In these words we may notice four things :i. The goodness of the Lord, going out, that is, for his peoples salvation. For that Christ should go out to lead men into the vineyard of justice was indeed an act of infinite goodness. Our Lord is five times said to have gone out. He went out in the beginning of the world, as a sower, to sow his creatures, The sower ivent out to sow his seed. Then in his nativity to enlighten the world, Until her just one come forth as brightness (I sa. I xii. i). In his Passion to save his own from the power of the devil and from all evil, My just one is near at hand, my saviour is gone forth (I sa. li. 5). He goes out like the father of a family, caring for his children and his goods. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Even three hundred years ago, believers found it difficult to sustain for forty days the proper Lenten spirit. That's why even then, countless Christians turned to the writings of Bishop Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704), whose great piety and simple eloquence won him renown as one of the greatest preachers of his time. From Bishop Bossuet's sermons and spiritual writings, believers drew ever greater Lenten wisdom and strength. Now translator Christopher Blum has selected from Bishop Bossuet's voluminous works fifty brief but remarkably powerful meditations that complement the daily readings at Mass during the Lenten season, thus offering to us the perfect companion for a thoughtful and fruitful Lent. If you read and meditate briefly on just one of them each day in Lent, I guarantee that this good French bishop's eloquence will soon have you not merely remembering the events of Christ's journey to His Crucifixion; it will have you spiritually walking with Him on that journey . . . which is precisely what we are called to do in Lent! With Bossuet, this Lent you will find yourself saying, "O Jesus! I present myself to you to make my journey in your company. O my Savior, receive your traveler! Here I am ready, holding on to nothing. Let me go with You to the Father." That's the fire that should burn in the heart of all Christians. This Lent, let Bishop Bossuet enkindle it in yours. Among the Meditations: God Alone Suffices Pray to God in Secret The Truth and the Life Tempted in the Desert The Sign of Jonah Love Your Enemies This Is My Beloved Son And You Will Be Forgiven The Wicked Tenants In Spirit and in Truth The Silence of Christ Priest, Prophet, and King Our Life, a Journey to God The Great Commandment I Was Hungry and You Fed Me The Love of God for Repentant Sinners Up to Jerusalem God, the Life of the Soul The Witness of the Baptist The Raising of Lazarus Jesus Is Persecuted The True Messiah The Anointing The Betrayal The Eucharist The Passion The Brevity of Life Washed of Our Sins A Sign of Contradiction No Man Ever Spoke Like This Man The Entry of Our Lord into Jerusalem To Unite Ourselves with Christ

Some preachers are more notable than others. Fr. Gerald Vann, O.P., was ordained in 1929 at the remarkable age of twenty-three in a Dominican Order known for its careful discrimination about its candidates. Despite fame both in his native England and in the United States, his brilliant and accessible writing has largely disappeared from view. Of great significance is this compendium of Lenten inspirations. In seven chapters marked by originality and striking clarity, Fr. Vann gets under the rind and into the heart of every aspect of Christ’s Passion. You’ll learn: What the Agony in the Garden tells us about our own struggles, sorrows, and sins What Christ’s betrayal reveals about the depth of our love, faith, and devotion How the scourging teaches us to rule our flesh, rather than letting it rule us How we can replicate the stillness of Mary in our lives Ways we can prepare for and withstand the Valley of the Shadow of Death What the difference between the two thieves teaches us about the glory of God How, through the sorrow of God, the world is renewed Fr. Vann emphasizes that in neither our spiritual lives nor our lives in the world can we ignore a crucial aphorism that will play a role in determining our destiny: “the importance of small things.” He draws out a plan for noticing, appreciating, and prospering from these simple treasures.
